4/9/2020 – Used the new HOSS seeder to sow the four westmost rows in the south half with Silver Queen Corn. Had soaked the rows this morning otherwise the seed would have been in dust.

Continue ReadingCajun Delight, seed saved from last year, was sowed on 3/17/20 but did not germinate. Eighteen days later, on 4/4, the row was tilled to re-plant on 4/5 with soaked seeds. The row was replanted with the HOSS seader. The second planting germinated fairly well. Research into germination problems and saved seed lead to learning […]
Continue Reading3/29/2020 – The PEPH and Kentucky Wonder Bush bean germination is very poor and the okra seeds (saved from okra grown last year) has not germinated…but that could be just okra. There has been no rain since 3/3/2020–3.5 weeks–but we have watered everything at least every other day. Soil temps taken this afternoon with the […]
Continue Reading3/17/2020 – Spread the 0-0-60 potash bought for the peas and beans between the Fergie tracks. Using the analysis for the corn here, that used 15-0-15 to be spread at 4 pts/60′ row [to apply 120 lbs/ac per the soil test], 0-0-60 is 4 times more concentrated so should only apply 1/4th as much. So, […]
Continue Reading10/19/2019 – Over half the okra is dead and what is producing is largely tough–even when small. There were only 3-6 pods per day for the whole row. The banana, Hungarian Hot Wax, Cayenne, and Bell peppers have been prolific although the Bells never grew larger peppers than 3″ round. It is time to plant […]
Continue Reading9/18/2019 – Sidedressed okra, bell peppers, banana peppers, and hot wax peppers with 34-0-0. Threw the white granules along the side of the rows in 12-18″ bans. Then watered it in as we have had no rain since August 26; i.e. 3 weeks ago.

Continue Reading7/20/2019 – The okra has produced well up to this week and it seems to have slowed down. That made me wish I had side dressed it last weekend when I should have. There was some 34-0-0 with lime left in a bucket in the grain bin and so I added a little fresh 34-0-0, […]
Continue Reading7/10/2019 – All okra leaves — including the African okra from Susan K. have small ragged holes from something eating them. Could not find the rascals so sprayed them with new Sevin.
Continue ReadingSprayed new Sevin lightly on emerging corn silks–other than the first planting–to hopefully prevent earworms. This included the: G90, 2nd planting; Cherokee White; Black; and the Silver King. Sidedressed Okra as it has been about 6 weeks (too long as they are bearing) Also side-dressed zinnias in that row to see what happens.
