1/29/2022 – Checked the pH with the meter along four east-west lines as cited below.
At the pear tree: East 6.4 – 6.5 – at Weather Sta., 6.0 – west 5.7 (1)
At the satsuma: East 6.2 – 6.5 – west 5.0
Near 2nd pecan: 6.5 – 6.6 – 6.4
At south pecan: 6.6 – 6.6 – 6.6
(1) in the NE corner 5.0
Conclusion
Per the 2020 SE Vegetable Growers Handbook, the desirable range for what we plant is 6.0-6.6. So, we only need to adjust the NE corner from the weather station to 2/3’s of the way to the center turn row. That area is something less than 1,000 SF.
To adjust the pH of 50 square feet of soil up by 1 unit, or from 5.5 to 6.5 in sandy soil apply 2.5 pounds of lime. So, 1,000/50=20. 20×2.5lbs=50 lbs. Therefore, spread one 40 lb. bag of the pelletized lime in the corner.
