5/2/2024 – Sowed PEPH with a No. 5 plate in five 60 ft rows. On the last rows, the seed in the cup did not appear to be dropping. I decided it was my imagination. Once I emptied the cup I again found the drop tube was plugged with PEPH seed as happened with the corn. I now have rows with no seed and will have to reseed.
Emailed HOSS Customer Service and Greg Key responded quickly that the clogging was likely due to backing up to clear the plate. Backing up pushed soil into the tube. Greg said “Instead of backing up when it jams, try picking up the back wheel and spinning it backward with your foot”
Likely, the issue of seeds stopping the plate from turning was made worse by pushing it too fast. That made the plate turn so fast that the rough seed did not have time to clear the plate before the plate turned past the drop tube.
5/3/2024 – Resowed PEPH in the five rows east of the tomatoes in the N½ and sowed them in the single row immediately west of the tomatoes. Given the 5 rows was packed some from the first sowing it moved easier and only once clogged as I only backed it up a few inches. After that I received Greg’s idea about using my foot to spin in backward to clear the plate.
Also sowed Hoss’ Green Blaze Bush Beans (PV857) in two rows between the cucumbers and the mustards.
Filled in gaps in the squash with seeds and put some in three large gaps in the corn rows.
