Sowed: Squash, Cukes, Corn, & Sunflowers: May 2025

Gardening

5/6/2025 – Sowed: Squash, Cukes, & Corn in the South Half

  • Poinsett 76 Cukes were sown in the full easternmost row;
  • Scallop Squash was sown in the north half of the 2nd row. The north half of this row will likely have yellow summer squash that we need to buy.
  • Pascola Zucchini was sown in the full 3rd row from the east;
  • Butternut Squash was sown in the southern half of the 4th row. The north half of this row will likely have yellow summer squash that we need to buy.
  • 4 rows of Silver King Corn were sown with the Hoss Seeder with the standard No. 6 plate in four rows next to the sunflower bed.

Seed bed preparation was:

  1. Ran Fergie to locate the seed beds:
    • For the Cukes and Squash – ran her with about 6-12 inches of space between the back tires to provide a 5-5.5 ft row width
    • For the corn ran her without extra space to provide a 42-inch row width
  2. For Fertilizing:
    • Threw 13-13-13 at one handful per about 4 ft. in the cucumber and squash row and the easternmost corn row. That was all the 13-13-13 we had.
    • Threw 15-0-15 at one handful per about 4 ft. in the other 3 corn rows.
  3. Seeding using the old plastic seeder with its wide back wheel to pack them in.
    • For cukes, sowed one seed at 12 inches apart using the PVC drop tube
    • For squash, sowed one seed 18 inches apart using the PVC drop tube
    • Corn was sown with the No. 6 plate in the Hoss Seeder.

About 4 PM, even though we were very tired, used the HOSS push plow with the stirrup weeder to weed and fluff up swaths in the wide Sunflower row in the south half, western most row. Sprinkled in saved sunflower seeds from last year. Used the old plastic seeder with its wide back wheel to pack them in.

Heavy Rain the next day

Our goal in sowing so much in one day was to get it in the ground before the predicted rainy next day, and it is getting late in spring. From midnight to 5 am, it rained 2 inches.
