Hoss Seeder Plates, Seed Spacing, & Amount Required

This page compiles our correleation of the HOSS Garden Seeder’s plates with their spacing for different seeds with what is recommended elsewhere for those seeds. The intent is to know when to plug holes in the plates to reduce the amount of thinning that would be needed.

Beans

  • Kentucky Wonder Bush – Hurley F&S
  • 2-3″ apart; 1-2″ deep
  • Sow with either HOSS plate No. 5 (2.8″ apart) or No. 6 (4.25″ apart)

Corn

  • Sow 1″ deep, 8-12″ spacing
  • Use HOSS plate 4 with half the holes covered to sow the seeds 2 x 4.25″, that is 8.5″ apart.

Greens

  • 1-6″ apart; ½-1″ deep
  • Sow with HOSS Plate No.1 to provide spacing of 2.1″ apart.

Okra

  • 6-12″ apart and 1-2″ deep
  • Sow with HOSS plate No. 3 with half the 6 holes covered to space them 2 x 2.8″ that is 5.6″ apart.
    • On 5/4/2025, sowed Spinless okra with a no. 3 plate in the HOSS Seader with every-other hole taped closed with cellophane tape on the underside of the plate. The tape stayed in place. One seed stuck in each of the taped holes; that was a good sign.
      • Sowed 3 rows in the north half with about 1 oz. of seed.

Peas

  • 2-3″ apart; 1-2″ deep
  • Sow with either HOSS plates No. 5 (2.8″ apart) or No. 6 (4.25″ apart)
  • Each ounce is approximately 150 seeds per Victory Seed. If 2.8″ apart, an ounce will sow 53 feet of row. So, for our 62 foot long rows we need 1.2 oz. per row.
