First Sowing in the 2022 Garden: Brocolli, Mustard & Onions

Gardening

2/20/2022 – This morning was supposed to be the last morning in the low 30’s with the high to be in the mid-60s for at least a week. So, disked the garden again. Drove the rows. Spread 8-8-8 between the tire tracks and pulled up the rows with the hiller. We sowed in the westmost row and the one east of it in the north half as cited below.

  • Second row from the westmost row (65′ from the fence)
    • about 20 ft of Savanna Hybrid Mustard on the north end
    • about 40 ft of yellow onion sets on the south end
  • Row immediately east of the above row; i.e. the third row from the future wide flower row:
    • about 15 feet of a double row of Lucullus Swiss Chard on the north end
    • about 30 feet of Green Magic Broccolli in the south end.
    • there is about a 15-foot gap where we will plant Florida Broadleaf mustard when we get some seed. Had wanted to sow Tendergreen but could not find and seed locally.

Of the 30-foot row of broccoli, only one plant came up and survived to 6″ high as of 4/24/2022.
