Spring Plan
Insert plan when everything is sowed.
Observations
Weather – VERY dry up to early May with cool nights that pushed all sowing until later than years past.
Soil Preparation – Disked only
Crops
- Tomatoes – Ordered seeds: Celebrity Plus and Big Beef
- Grew seedlings in the greenhouse and transplanted into deep holes made with the post hole diggers in hills made with Frank’s hiller. No fertilizer was in the hill.
- Once the transplants were growing, sprinkled time-release fertilizer around each plant. They responded quickly and grew well while blooming and setting fruit.
- Corn – G-90 bought at Hurley F&F
- Bought row busters for HOSS push plow and sowed seed low rather than on a hill like all past years. Waited until all mornings were in the 60’s and we finally had some rain. Dribbled 0-33-0 in the busted row and then seeded with the HOSS seeder and the modified No. 6 plate. Good germination.
- At V1 applied the first fertilizer, 15-0-15, at 2 lbs per row then used the HOSS push plow with the 8” Oscillating Hoe to blend it in and hit the little weeds between the stalks and where the tractor/cultivator cleaned up the middles the day before.
- Squash/Zucchini bought at Hurley F&F. Do not know variety.
- Sowed on a hill without fertilizer below it. Good germination.
- Cucumbers – Full row next to Beach Sunflowers near the pecan tree.
- Poinset 76 seeds leftover from last year. ALL germinated.
- Clemson (Spineless?) from Hurley F&F. All germinated.
- Kentucky Wonder Bush Beans
- Navahoe Beans
- PEPH Peas
