7/29/2026 – Today Caleb with Estes checked for leaks after adding 2 lbs. of Freon last night. My calendar entry of today’s findings is below. As we have years of warranty on the coil (no warranty now on the $1800 labor) we will watch and see how it does. He said to call him if there is a problem.
Caleb/Estes: Pressures held but sniffer had a low reading at inside coil: maybe a microscopic leak in inside coil.
The process he told me he went through was:
- Trapped all the freon in the compressor, which raised the pressure there very high. No pressure loss, so no leaks there.
- Put nitrogen-with a little Freon left- in the lines and the inside coil up to 510 PSI. Saw a 1 PSI drop initially then steady for 30 minutes. If there is a leak, then very very small. Asked how many times the system has been checked, as if it was not fully charged when installed, then each check was a freon loss, and maybe that added up. He then came inside.
- He showed me his sniffer with a 17 ppm reading showing a very small detection inside the inside coil. Said that if the inside coil is leaking he usually gets readings in the 700s.
- As we have years of warranty on the coil (no warranty now on the $1800 labor) we will watch and see how it does. He said to call him if there is a problem.
- He pointed out we have a Carrier Infinity and that is a very good unit.
