Spread Preemergent Herbicide on the Yard

Yard

2/8/2024 – Spread Pendulum 2G for crabgrass where the label says for St. Augustinegrass to spread 75 – 100 lbs/acre = 1.7 – 2.3 lbs/1,000 sf.

Used the new Earthway cyclone seeder/spreader bought in January to replace Dad’s old one the rats or squirrels had eaten. The rate chart on the bottom of the spreader is below and on the Spreader page under Small Equipment.

Given the bag says the material is granular and the chart shows to spread 2 lbs/1,000 SF set the spreader on 4.5 and it should spread an 18 ft swath. The 40 lbs. should cover 20,000 SF.

The 40 lbs. did not cover 20,000 SF so the 4.5 setting on the spreader was too high. Perhaps as the material was very small granules it ran through faster. It did cover:

  • Backyard from the driveway to the north side of the RV and between the azaleas to the pecan trees and one swath on the east side of the pecan trees;
  • The front yard spots where St. Augustine has not recovered; both sides of the walkway to the front door;
  • One swath on each side of the driveway.

A rough approximation is that it was spread 1.5 to 2 times heavier than the 2 lbs per 1,000 SF target. Should have set the spreader at 2.5.
